Polizeiliches Durgangslager Amersfoort (PDA) periode 1941-1943

After the capitulation Barakkenkamp Appelweg was used by the German Wehrmacht for the recuperation of soldiers. Later in 1940 German troops were permanently housed in the camp. In May 1941 the Sicherheitsdienst (SD, the intelligence organisation of the SS) followed. The SD requisitioned the camp in order to turn it into a Schutzhaftlager (a camp to keep prisoners in captivity as protection). Because of the strongly growing number of prisoners as result of the nazi rule, the regular prisons were filled to the brim and other places for prisoners had to be found. One of the new locations to keep prisoners in Schutzhaft was Barakkenkamp Appelweg. The name was then changed into Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort (PDA). This name was changed into Erweitertes Polizeigefängnis Amersfoort in spring 1943. Most people remain calling the Kamp PDA.
