The ceremony is attended by personal guests, including former prisoners , relatives , representatives of the Ministry of Health , provincial and municipal governments , the Dutch Red Cross and several fellow institutions .
Every year the ‘camp bell’ is sound by Mr. F. van den Berg jr. , son of prisoner Frans van den Berg sr. ( the camp cook) . In 1945 he was first asked by Mrs. Van Overeem, to ring the bell for the final appeal. Frans van den Berg was only fifteen -year-old at the time.
After two minutes of silence the parade begins towards the monument ‘Prisoner in front of the Fire Platoon’ at the end of the former shooting range . The first wreath is always deposited by two former prisoners. Each present person is handed a rose which is then deposited at the statue ‘The Stone Man’.
