April 19th 1945
In April 1945 the allied armies had advanced to Achterveld. The henchmen of the camp planned to retreat to Scheveningen, where the other members of their SS – units already were. That is why on April 19th 1945 the camp was formally handed over to Mrs. Loes van Overeem, the official representative of the Dutch Red Cross. The guards left the camp on April 20th 1945. They took with them about ninety prisoners that formed part of the so called Hemelvaartcommando (Ascension command). The other prisoners in Kamp Amersfoort were left behind. (In Kamp Vught the remaining prisoners were all killed.) After the departure of the Germans Loes van Overeem read a proclamation to the remaining several hundred prisoners.
